R4D Welcomes First Country Director in Ethiopia

April 12, 2018   |   Ethiopia

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Results for Development (R4D) today announced the appointment of Yosef Alemu, MPH, as the first country director in Ethiopia, where the organization is expanding its work. Over the past three years, R4D has partnered with the government of Ethiopia to better track nutrition financing and expand access to lifesaving treatment.

The addition of this new role is just one step the organization is taking to respond to country partners who have said they value the global technical knowledge and expertise R4D brings, and would benefit from in-country presence.

“To more strategically drive impact together with our partners in Ethiopia, who have expressed interest in broadening our collaboration, R4D has decided to expand our country office in Addis Ababa,” said Gina Lagomarsino, R4D’s president and CEO. “We’re excited to welcome Yosef, who brings more than 15 years of experience working with the Ethiopian government and a variety of other stakeholders to strengthen health and nutrition programs in the country.”

As director of the Ethiopia office, Mr. Alemu will manage R4D’s Ethiopia team and help cultivate and build partnerships with government officials and other key partners.

“I am honored to join R4D, an organization which was born just a decade ago, and has achieved remarkable growth,” said Yosef Alemu. “There is a high sense of enthusiasm among Ministry of Health and development partners toward R4D’s approach and current support in market shaping and nutrition funding tracking in Ethiopia, and I am so excited to join the R4D team who is dedicated to address and expand these needs.”

Prior to R4D, Mr. Alemu worked as a deputy country director at Nutrition International (NI) in Ethiopia, where he was responsible for the management of the program portfolio of the country office and led the development and implementation of various nutrition and nutrition -sensitive health projects. Before NI, he worked at Christian Children’s Fund of Canada (CCFC) as a health projects manager from 2012 to 2014. He also held various roles at CARE Ethiopia between 2003 and 2011.

Mr. Alemu holds a master’s degree in public health from Gondar University and a bachelor’s degree in public health from Dilla University. He speaks Afan Oromo, Amharic and English.
